Choosing the Right Cell Phone Antivirus

AVG Logo

Viruses have been a “privilege” of the PC world for a long time, but with the rapid development of mobile technology, that privilege has spread to cell phones as well. So far, the only thing that was preventing viruses from becoming more common is the fact that each cell phone model had its own operating system, and viruses and other malicious software are designed to infect a specific platform.

Needless to say, it is essential that you protect your mobile phone in the same way you would protect your PC. Without further ado, here are some of the options which can help you protect your cell phone:

Norton Mobile Security

A familiar name in the PC realm, Norton also offers mobile security. Besides providing protection from viruses and Norton for Mobilemalware, Norton Mobile Security has some interesting options, such as lock-out capability for filtering unwanted messages and calls, remote find and remote locking in case your cell phone is stolen. Once you’ve accessed your device remotely, you have the option of using a wipe feature, which will delete all the data you have to prevent someone from abusing it. Supported platform is Android 2 or later, and it requires less than 2 MB of space. You can download a free LITE version and check it out.

Kaspersky Mobile Security

Another household name in the antivirus business, Kaspersky offers antivirus and spam protection, data encryption, firewall and much more. Supporting numerous platforms, like BlackBerry 4.5 and up, Symbian, Android 1.6 and up and Windows Mobile 5.0 or later, Kaspersky Mobile Security is not free some like some of its competitors, but Kaspersky often has special offers, so, given the right moment, you can get it for about $15, which is half the price.

ESET Mobile Security

ESET mobile security provides firewall, remote wipe and spam protection. Similar to its PC counterpart, it has portable memory scanning and evaluation of files uploaded via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or infrared, quarantine and so on. You need about 1 MB of memory to run it. Supported operating systems include Windows Mobile 5.0 and later, and some versions of Symbian. However, with price set at $59.99, it’s pretty expensive, but you can test if for free for 30 days.

Another name PC users will be familiar with. In fact, they will feel right at home. AVG Mobile Antivirus is a free antivirus application for Android mobile devices, which, apart from locating and removing viruses, has the ability to perform scheduled scans, as well already previously mentioned wipe feature, by using GPS to locate a lost or stolen device. You can expand its features for less than $10, by adding anti-phishing and anti-spam options.
This list is not complete by any means, and finding the right fit may take you some time, but you should adopt some habits that will make you less vulnerable. You’d want to avoid pirated software, patches, updates, or emails from an unknown source, as well as learn to update your antivirus on a regular basis.

Now all you need is a new cell phone now – so check out these ones!

Significant improvement of UI

The latest product from Avast has earned excellent ratings from various independent experts who have already conducted checks on its effectiveness. The system includes a uniquely designed File Shredder that ensures greater amount of security than all other competitors’ products do. It comes with some significant improvements on its user interface to give all users an easy access to different types of free apps for the protection of tablets or mobile devices.

Fewer Shields

Avast’s 2014 edition streamlines a good collection of all its real time shields against the possible malware. Althoughfree_antivirus2 users of the previous versions had to see status and configure eight different shields, users of this new version confront only three shields of which all are quite easy-to-understand. The shields are Mail Shield, Web Shield, and File System Shield.

Apart from providing simplified navigation facilities, the software includes a file management system that can produce smart decisions on unknown file types or new data. There is an enhanced opportunity to scan and analyze crowd-sourced items to check if there is any malicious item.

File encryption is fantastic while malware cleaning facility is superb. The new edition of antivirus can not only scan but also install items using safe mode. How avast! Free Antivirus 2014 proves to be inadequate— Cons?

Malware blocking using heuristic detection module.
Despite the fact that Avast has some popularity for its malware-blocking feature, its heuristic malware detection has been reported to have blocked several valid programs running in the system. Many expert users also reveal that they faced difficulties when they tried to exclude some of their valid programs which were wrongly-blocked.

Inadequate phishing protection

There is a controversy that the phishing protection of the latest antivirus software lacks propriety while developers claim that the product encompasses “Dual Phishing Protection”. A security plug-in included in it prevents websites which show illegitimate attempts to steal your computer’s security credentials.

Its Web Shield employs necessary blocks when accessing to various fraudulent sites. The shield also labels the sites as either “Phishing-Q” or “BankFraud-N”. However, the so-called poor Dual Phishing system is reported to provide an inadequate detection rate which is only 32%.

Unavailability of Automatic Updates

Though there is a button labeled “Activate automatic updates” in its UI, users cannot get an update, and they find an offer made to upgrade to the premium version instead. Both the SecureLine VPN and the AccessAnywhere require users to make separate purchases.

Finding The Best Free Antivirus Software for Your PC

free antivirus programs

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need to spend a ton of money when it comes to protecting your computer against the dangers of viruses. In fact, in most cases you do not even have to spend a penny! On this page I want to run you through some of the best antivirus software for your PC. All of it is 100% free. Can’t say fairer than that right?

AdAware Antivirus

AdAware was originally conceived as a piece of software that was designed to fight off all those annoying Trojans and the like which generated pop ups on your computer. In fact, just a few years ago it was one of the most popular pieces of free software in the world for protection of that nature.

Its current incarnation however goes well beyond blocking those ad generating menaces. Nowadays it can scan your computer in real time to ensure that you stay fully protected from viruses. It will scan every single inch of your computer to ensure that nothing is lurking within. It is a fairly lightweight program too, which means that you will not even notice it when it is running. The interface of AdAware is also VERY simple to browse through. This software is much recommended.

Microsoft Security Essentials (Windows Defender in Windows 8)

If you own a Windows computer then this software is going to come installed as standard. Like most other free antivirus software it will run real time protection. You can also scan for intruders whenever you like. It is not the most powerful on this list, but it certainly is a good starting point for those that understand the value of PC security.

Avast!8

This program is very similar in functionality to AdAware. Many people claim that it has slightly better detection though. People also find the user interface slightly easier to browse through. One of the great things about Avast! Is that it seems to be getting an almost constant stream of updates. This is absolutely fantastic, after all, there are new threats coming into existence all of the time. When a company stays on top of things, you know that you are going to be keeping your computer safe. Check out my Avast review here.

AVG Free

The last free antivirus software I wish to draw to your attention is that of AVG Free. This software functions in pretty much the same way as the previous ones I have mentioned. However, it has a feature which I have yet to spot on the free antivirus programsother software. This is the fact that it will check every single link that pops up in real time. This way you will know whether there is a threat of being ‘attacked’ from a particular website before you click the link. This does slow down the browsing of the internet somewhat, but to be honest, if you are the type of person who normally gets yourself into a bit of a pickle then this sacrifice in speed will be worth it.

Of course, this is just a very brief guide to the best free antivirus software for your PC. I am pretty sure that there is a whole heap of software that I have yet to mention. I suggest that you start with this list though. They should fulfill your needs pretty well.

One final point though. Remember, the best protection for your computer is always you. If you browse the internet and check through your emails with a bit of common sense then you should avoid most viruses straight off the bat.
